Gottfried Krueger Brewery sold the first canned beer in the United States in Richmond, Virginia on January 24, 1935. The American Can Co. tried to can beer in 1909, but the cans couldn’t withstand the pressure from carbonation and exploded. Finally, the company discovered that coating the inside of the can using the same “keg-lining” technique used for keg beer would hold the can together.
Editor’s Note: I still prefer my beer served with an ice-cold mug, as illustrated here.
